Make Your Own Compass

A compass is a very simple device that consists of a magnetic needle connected to a low-friction pivot point that always points to magnetic north, or the North Pole. A compass uses a lightweight magnet and low friction because the Earth's magnetic field is not very strong. The compass is a tool that has been instrumental in the history of human exploration. You can make your own compass, similar to the simple compasses created hundreds of years ago, with just some simple materials.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle Magnet Float (cork, styrofoam cup or plastic bottle cap) Shallow dish, 9 to 12 inches in diameter
  1. Step 1

Magnetize the needle. This is accomplished by stroking a magnet down the needle about 20 times in one direction.

  2. Step 2

Fill a shallow dish with about an inch of water.

  3. Step 3

Place a float in the water in the dish. A float can be made by slicing a piece from a cork, cutting out the bottom of a styrofoam cup, or you can use the plastic cap from a juice bottle or milk jug.

  4. Step 4

Put the magnetized needle in the center of the float. It is okay if the eye and point of the needle extend past the edges of the float.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the needle to slowly turn and stop. It will point toward magnetic north.
