How to Design CD Inserts

A personalized mixed CD is always a great present for a friend. Even the best mix isn't quite right without a nice CD insert, though. Not only can you list the tracks, lyrics and whatever other information you want on the inserts, but you can also add photographs or other images to amuse and entertain your friend.

Open pages in an image-creation program for the front and back of the CD insert. The front part should by 4.625 inches square, while the back part should be 4.625 inches high by 5.375 inches wide.

    • 2

Set a background color. In most image-creation programs, you can simply fill in the whole background with a particular color. You could also tile a repeating pattern or create a color gradient across the back of each image.

    • 3

Add background images. If you are creating a CD for friends, use any image you want, copyrighted or not. If you are going to sell the CD for profit, find an image in the public domain. Follow the link below in Resources for a list of public domain images.

Put the title on the front insert and a track listing on the back. Most image-creation programs have built-in text editing programs. More high-end ones such as Photoshop have sophisticated effects so that you can give your text interesting three-dimensional textures.

Design any additional sheets you want for the front insert on additional 4.625-square-inch templates. You may want to create a double-sided front sheet, or even a minibooklet with lyrics or photographs in it.
