Sunless tanning sprays are a safe and healthy alternative to tanning under the sun or in a tanning salon. In fact, the Mayo Clinic recommends the use of sunless tanning products instead of exposing your skin to ultraviolet light. According to the FDA, most fake tanning sprays include an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that temporarily darkens the skin without exposure to ultraviolet light. The FDA has approved the safety of DHA for external use in fake tan sprays. Applying a fake tan spray is relatively easy, but it may take a few applications before you get the hang of it. You can also ensure an even, smooth glow by preparing your skin before you apply.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Loofah or body scrub Towel Razor and shaving gel, if applicable Soap
  1. Step 1

Choose a realistic color for your skin tone. Most fake tan sprays come in different formulations, including light, medium and dark. If you have light or fair skin, start with the lightest tone available to obtain a realistic tan.

  2. Step 2

Clean and exfoliate your skin in the shower. Exfoliation is very important to remove dead skin cells and ensure an even tan. To exfoliate, rub a rough loofah gently over your skin while it is wet or use a body scrub. Simply apply the body scrub to your skin, rub it in gently and rinse.

  3. Step 3

Shave your legs if you are a woman. Use a new razor and shaving gel or cream to get the closest shave possible. Hair stubble on your legs can interfere with the application and cause an uneven tan.

  4. Step 4

Dry your skin with a towel and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes to ensure your skin is completely dry. Dispense a small amount of any body moisturizer onto your fingertips and rub it into your elbows, knees and ankles. The skin on these areas tends to be drier than other parts of your body, so they absorb more tanning spray. Applying the moisturizer will ensure these areas don't look too dark.

  5. Step 5

Remove the lid from the fake tan spray and position it approximately 10 inches from your skin. Hold out your left arm and press down on the nozzle to dispense the spray. Quickly move the spray up your arm until your entire arm is covered. Don't go overboard--a light spray is best. Repeat with your other arm and gradually work your way down your body. Most tanning sprays do not require you to rub in the spray, but check the instructions on your particular product.

  6. Step 6

Ask a friend or spouse to apply the fake tan spray to your back to ensure an even application. You can reach this area yourself by spraying over your shoulder or around your side, but another person is required for an even application. To apply the fake tan spray to your face and neck, spray the product onto your hands first and then quickly pat it onto your face and neck. Do not spray yourself in the face.

  7. Step 7

Wash your hands with soap and water immediately following the application so your palms do not darken. Let the tan dry for at least 10 to 15 minutes before you get dressed so the color does not rub off on your clothes. In addition, try to avoid showering for at least 5 or 6 hours after applying the tanning spray. Your tan should start developing within 2 to 3 hours, depending on the product.

  8. Step 8

Reapply the tanning spray as needed once your tan begins to fade. Your fake tan can last anywhere from 3 to 7 days, depending on the specific product.
