How to Start a Drive-In/Delivery Business

Concierge and grocery delivery businesses are becoming more and more popular, and it's a relatively easy business to start. It doesn't require a large amount of capital; you essentially need a reliable delivery vehicle and driver, and maybe a drive-through location, depending on what you're offering. Here's how to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of drive-in/delivery business you want to start. The two main options are a concierge/errand service or a food drive-in/delivery service.

  2. Step 2

Get reliable transportation. You need to have well-maintained vehicles for your company fleet; perhaps it's only you and your car in the beginning. Be sure your car is in working order, undergoes regular maintenance and has adequate space for what you will be delivering.

  3. Step 3

Get business insurance coverage for your vehicle(s). Standard car insurance, in most cases, will not be enough for vehicles used for business delivery services.

  4. Step 4

Plan your routes and the limits of your delivery area. Find out when traffic is bad and what alternate routes exist for high-traffic times. Stock your vehicle with up-to-date maps of the area and/or a GPS navigation system. Take test drives to find out how long it actually takes you to get from one end to the other of your delivery area.

  5. Step 5

Set up your drive-in location. If you are starting a concierge business, you need a simple business location with a drive-through window so that your clients can come to drop off and pick up items. If you are starting a food-related service, you will need slightly more space to hold grocery orders while waiting for them to be picked up; you will also need appropriate cooling options, such as a commercial refrigerator and freezer, to keep cold and fresh foods in their best condition while waiting for pickup.
