How to Make Realistic Fake Blood
You can use fake blood for Halloween costumes, practical jokes or film projects. This recipe produces cheap, realistic fake blood very similar to that used on movie sets.
Things You'll Need
- Mixing bowl Alcohol-free water-soluble hair gel Water-soluble radiator lubricant Red food coloring Chocolate syrup Hand sanitizer
Instructions

-
1
Determine how much blood you need and pour about ¾ of this amount of hair gel into a mixing bowl.
-
2
Add a few drops of radiator or motor lubricant and mix. The lubricant should be fairly clear and a little thicker than water. Repeat until the gel becomes watery.
-
-
3
Add an amount of red food coloring equal to half of the existing mixture. Try to use a high-quality food coloring, if possible, as cheap dye can leave the blood more pink than red.
-
4
Add a small amount of chocolate syrup. This deepens the color of the fake blood and gives it a realistic dribble.
-
5
Add hand sanitizer if the fake blood is too thick. Use only a drop or two at a time, as too much sanitizer can ruin the consistency.
-
6
The final result should be thicker than water and deep red in color. It is not sticky and will splatter and smear just like real blood.

Tips & Warnings
Adding dishwashing liquid to the mixture will make it less permanent on clothing, but thinner. Adjust all ingredients to balance out the effect of the liquid. If using for a film project, make the blood darker than real blood by adding more chocolate syrup. The camera causes lighter blood to look fake.
This fake blood is toxic. It should not be consumed or come in contact with the eyes.
