Desserts decorated with fondant look like they were made by a pro. It can be used on cakes and cookies and to make decoration pieces for desserts. Fondant is a great way to create professional looking decorations. It is easy to use with a little patience, practice and know-how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fondant Plastic wrap Cornstarch Rolling pin Cookie cutters Sharp thin knife
  1. Step 1

Determine the amount of fondant you need for the decorations you will be making. Cover it with plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container until ready to use.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the fondant for rolling by kneading it on a surface lightly dusted in cornstarch. Knead the fondant until it becomes shiny and is soft like play dough. If it is sticky, add a little cornstarch.

  3. Step 3

Check the readiness of the fondant. Make a small fondant ball and drop it on your work area. It should spread slightly but keep its shape.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle sifted cornstarch on your work area. Use the rolling pin to roll out the fondant to desired thickness, adding cornstarch to the rolling pin as needed.

  5. Step 5

Use cookie cutters dusted in cornstarch to cut out shapes and decorations. If you are good at freehand, you may also use a sharp thin knife. To stick two pieces of fondant together, make an indentation on one piece of fondant no bigger than the adhering piece and press the pieces together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fondant takes a lot of practice to make perfect. Add food coloring during the kneading process.
  • If fondant is not wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in an airtight container, it will dry out.
