How to Put Up an Electric Dog Fence
It is possible, in theory, for someone skilled in electronics to assemble their own electric dog fence. In reality, however, it's more practical for most people to simply purchase a commercially manufactured dog fence and only put it up themselves. Though some designs can involve wiring and posts above ground, most models are marketed as invisible fences and therefore require some digging.

1
Apply a dummy collar. Before the fence is installed, it is recommended to get the dog used to the new collar by putting it on him several days before installation if possible. The electrodes should press firmly against the dog's neck and be tight enough that the dog won't remove it. This helps ensure the dog will associate the beeping and shock with the area of the fence rather than the collar itself.

2
Dig the trench. To install the invisible fence underground, a small trench around the perimeter of the area must be dug. Though the trench only needs to be about 2 inches deep or less, beware of and avoid buried electrical, cable or other wiring that might be disturbed in the process.

3
Mount the control unit. The small box that powers the electric fence is usually mounted somewhere in a garage or other sheltered area, which might require the drilling of holes or the tightening of screws. Depending on the model, the control unit might be battery powered or need access to an electrical outlet.
-
4
Lay the wire. With the control unit off, attach one end of the fence wire to the unit and run the other end through the full length of the trench and back to the control unit. Fill in the trench so the wire is completely covered.

5
Calibrate. The control unit allows you to adjust the correction zone in proximity to the wire within which your dog receives a warning beep, and the voltage applied when he passes the wire. Depending on the size and temperament of your dog, as well as the desired limits of the yard space, calibrate the control unit so as to train the dog without doing physical harm.

6
Power the collar. The final step is to put fresh batteries in the collar, and return the powered collar to the dog.

Tips & Warnings
When calibrating the control unit, consult the instructions of your invisible fence for recommended settings. In time, it might be possible to reduce the effects, as your dog learns to stay within the electric fence.
