Remove My GPS From My Car

For those who are car enthusiasts, a GPS unit is a must-have item. A change of brand or model necessitates a new harness, and the user must detach the unit from the car without harming the glass or dashboard. Here are instructions for removing most portable GPS units from an automobile.

Things You'll Need

  • Bottle of Goo-Gone (available at hardware stores) Spatula or scraper (silicone or plastic to reduce the chance of scratching the windshield glass)

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the GPS unit according to instructions.

    • 2

Unplug the GPS unit from the power supply in the dashboard by pulling the adapter from the outlet. If the GPS is running on battery power, skip this step.

    • 3

Unlatch the GPS unit from the plastic harness. Usually, the module clicks into the harness if the user pushes it downward. To remove, it may be necessary to push a section of the frame in or slide the device out. Once that's removed, put it someplace safe and theft-proof--preferably not the glove compartment.

    • 4

Detach the harness from the windshield. Many models are pasted to the glass with glue and will need to be gently pried up. Use a scraper to lift the sticky tape from the windshield surface. Don't push too hard or the glass may get scratched.

For GPS units that have suction cups, simply lift the edge of the cup to allow some air to enter. The harness will fall off on its own.

If there's any glue residue from the harness, use a bit of Goo Gone on a rag to remove it.
