How to Line a Knit Bag
Adding a fabric lining to a knit bag allows smaller items to be carried without worry of them falling out between the stitches. It also gives the bag a more professional, finished look.
Instructions
-
-
1
Fold the fabric in half with the right sides facing, meaning the sides you want showing when you open the bag should be on the inside.
-
2
Place the bag on top of the fabric and trace the shape of the bag onto the fabric. Remove the bag and pin around the traced outline.
-
-
3
Cut out the pinned lining, leaving about half an inch outside the traced lines to allow for a seam.
Putting together the lining
-
4
Sew the two bottom corners at a 45-degree angle about half an inch in from the corner. This creates depth in the lining, increasing the space inside the lining.
-
5
Sew together each of the two sides. If you are sewing the lining by hand, be sure to sew up the side, then back down for extra strength.
-
6
Place the lining inside the bag. Fold down the top of the lining so that the edge is between the lining and the bag and pin in place.
-
7
Sew the lining to the top of the bag through both the lining and the folded over fabric. Be sure to keep the lining fabric slightly below the top edge of the bag so that the seam remains fairly hidden.

Tips & Warnings
Use a thread color that is similar to the color of the lining and the bag itself.
