Play a Db Chord for Guitar

The Db chord, which can also be enharmonically spelled as C#, does not occur often in popular music for guitar, but does appear frequently in jazz, blues and classical music. Having this voicing under your fingers will ensure that you are never left looking for your chord dictionary the next time you see it on a lead sheet.

Instructions

  1. How to Play a Db Chord for Guitar

    • 1

Place the left-hand index finger on the fourth fret of the fifth string, the root of the chord, Db. Keeping the left-hand fingers in the middle, or right side, of the fret will greatly increase sustain and tone when strumming the full chord.

    • 2

Position the left-hand middle finger on the sixth fret of the fourth string, which is the fifth of the chord, Ab.

    • 3

Place the left-hand ring finger on the sixth fret of the third string. This is the root of the chord, Db.

    • 4

Position the left-hand pinky finger on the sixth fret of the second string to produce the third of the chord, F.

    • 5

Strum the middle four strings to produce a Db chord. Watch that you do not hit the outer two strings as this will produce an undesirable sound.

Tips & Warnings

  • Training the right-hand to avoid the outer two strings will be better for your technique in the long-term than if you mute the sixth string with your right-hand thumb.
