How to Drill Holes in Canning Jars

In order to make a lamp out of a canning jar, you will need to drill a hole in the glass for the cord to go through. You can use a regular drill, but a drill press is the preferred option.

• Drill press or drill Diamond-tipped bit Water sprayer

Instructions

1. Secure the jar for drilling. Use a drill press, or a clamp with a cloth tightened enough to hold the jar without overly straining it.

2. Moisten the drill bit. Keeping the drill bit wet is crucial in drilling glass. You will need someone to continually spray water on the drill bit while drilling.

3. Begin drilling slowly. Don't put too much stress on the glass, or it may shatter. As the glass starts to give way, increase pressure and speed slowly, never going so fast as to cause damage to the jar or bit.

4. As the bit begins to emerge on the other side of the glass, slow down. Slowing the speed will create a smoother hole and eliminate splintering at the opening.

Tips & Warnings

• A ¼-inch diamond-tipped drill bit should be sufficient to drill a hole for the cord. Glass drilling is a delicate process that requires precision; you may consider paying someone to complete this task.

• Always keep the drill bit wet. If it dries, the glass will likely shatter. Do not drill too fast. If the bit changes color due to heat, both the bit and the glass will be damaged. Wear safety glasses in case of splintering glass.
