Play an A# Chord for Guitar

The A# chord falls within the first three frets on the guitar but is not considered an open position chord since it does not use any open strings. Since it is a non-open position chord, but is located in the lower third of the guitar, it can be used as a gateway chord between the open and upper positions. As well, since the right hand only strums the middle four strings, it can be used as a technique builder.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the left-hand index finger on the first fret of the fifth string. This is the root of the chord, A#. Make sure to place all left-hand fingers in the middle, or right side, of the fret to increase tone and sustain.

    • 2

Position the left-hand middle finger on the third fret of the fourth string. This is the fifth of the chord, E# (F).

    • 3

Place the left-hand ring finger on the third fret of the third string, which is the root of the chord, A#.

    • 4

Position the left-hand pinky finger on the third fret of the second string. This is the third of the chord, CX (D).

    • 5

Strum all four notes in succession to produce an A# chord. Watch that you do not hit the outer two strings as these notes are not part of the chord and will sound quite harsh when struck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practicing alternating between the A# and open A chord is a great to develop the muscle memory needed to play this chord. If you have already begun to learn barre chords, you can barre all of the notes on the third fret with your left-hand ring finger.
