Once you have learned to play all of the open chords, and several chords in the mid-range of the guitar, the next step becomes learning how to play upper-position chords. The Gb chord is a relatively easy voicing to play that is located in the upper third of the guitar's neck. Learning to play this chord will allow you to add a new timbre to any song you are strumming along to.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the left-hand index finger on the ninth fret of the fifth string. This is the root of the chord, Gb. Keep the index finger, and all subsequent fingers, on the right to middle side of the fret. This will optimize tone and sustain.

  2. Step 2

Place the left-hand middle finger on the eleventh fret of the fourth string to produce the fifth of the chord, Db.

  3. Step 3

Position the left-hand ring finger on the eleventh fret of the third string. This is the root of the chord, Gb.

  4. Step 4

Place the left-hand pinky finger on the eleventh fret of the second string, which is the third of the chord, Bb.

  5. Step 5

Strum all four notes at the same time to produce the Gb chord. Do not hit the first or sixth string, as these notes are not a part of the chord.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is considered better technique if you train your right-hand to only hit the middle four strings, rather than muting the sixth string with the right-hand thumb.
