How to Sign Up for the US Postal Service Exam

If you want to assume a Career Bargaining position with the US Postal Service, you will need to pass the official Postal Service Exam. This exam is offered at many postal offices around the country, and applicants must receive a score of 70 or higher on the written examination to be considered for employment. Applications for the exam are accepted over the phone and online.

        Contact your local post office to find out if and when the next postal exam is being offered. If there is a date coming up, you can request an official Announcement number.

        Call the US Postal Service Examination Services department at (866) 999-8777 and follow the prompts; you will need to provide your personal contact information and Announcement number that was issued when you inquired about the exam.

        Find an examination location online. Visit the Postal Service's HR website to look up where the next exam is being held in your area. You can use this tool if you do not have an Announcement number. Select your state from the drop-down menu and find out if there are any examination openings near you; if there are, you will have the opportunity to register for the exam online (see Resources below).

        Wait for your exam materials. After successfully signing up for the exam, the Postal Service will issue an official exam preparation packet that includes the exact date, time and location for you to take your exam.

    • The US Postal Service Exam tests applicants on reasoning abilities, number sequencing abilities and English competence. There are 85 individual districts around the United States, but only some announce and administer exams at their location. Exams are typically administered 14 to 24 months apart.

    • The post office does not give much advanced notice for exam dates, so you need to be prepared to take the exam within a week or a few day's timeframe. Do not apply to sit for the same exam twice; duplicate applications will be denied.
