Design Your Own Homecoming Dress

Designing your own homecoming dress is a fun project to undertake if you enjoy the art of design, want a unique homecoming dress or haven't found anything you like at the dress store. You can then have your design made into a dress by a local dressmaker or seamstress. One of the best things about designing your own homecoming dress is that no one else at the dance will be wearing the same outfit.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sketchpad Pencil
  1. Step 1

Choose a specific style for the dress. Choose a length for the dress: short, mid-length or floor-length. Decide how you want the neckline to be: strapless, sweetheart, one-shoulder or two-strap. Begin sketching the design on your sketchpad.

  2. Step 2

Choose a color for your homecoming dress. It can be one solid color, multi-colored or patterned with stripes or polka dots. The color and print of your design are of utmost importance, so choose wisely. It's best to choose a color that complements your skin tone, or a color that is one of your favorites.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you'd like your homecoming dress to have any embellishments such as beading or embroidery. Rhinestones, pearls or multi-colored beads can add a touch of glamour to an otherwise plain dress.

  4. Step 4

Add details such as bows, brooches, sashes, slits or belts. You can add a belt or sash in a complementary color around the waist of your dress. If your dress is long, you can put in a slit on one side or in the back. Bows and brooches will add a touch of sophistication.

  5. Step 5

Pick a fabric for your homecoming dress. Some popular choices are satin, silk, taffeta and jersey. Finish sketching your design.

Tips & Warnings
  • Model your design after the designs of your favorite clothing designer or celebrity. Research some popular styles and designs for formal dresses to give you an idea before designing your own homecoming dress.
