Coffee beans can be purchased either roasted or green. Roasted coffee beans are ready to grind straight from the bag. Green coffee beans have to be roasted before use. Roasted beans are available in many types: dark roast, French roast or a blend of several roasting types. Whichever type of coffee beans you buy, you can be assured of a great-tasting cup of coffee when you grind roasted beans.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coffee beans, either roasted or green Small cast iron skillet Wooden spoon Coffee grinder

    Roasting the Beans

  1. Step 1

Place a cast iron skillet on the stove and heat until the pan reaches a medium-high heat.

  2. Step 2

After the skillet is hot, pour green coffee beans equal to one pot of coffee, usually 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of beans for an 8- to 9-cup pot.

  3. Step 3

Stir the beans constantly with a wooden spoon. Continue stirring until all of the beans have reached a deep brown color and become shiny as the oils are released from the beans. This will take 10 to 15 minutes over high heat.

  4. Step 4

Allow the beans to cool, if desired. This is not absolutely necessary, but some coffee lovers will say that it keeps the bitterness out of the finished coffee. You can either let them cool in the skillet or transfer them to a heat-resistant container as they will be too hot for plastic.

  5. Making the Coffee

  6. Step 1

Place the roasted beans in the coffee grinder.

  7. Step 2

Put the lid on the grinder and grind the beans to a powder.

  8. Step 3

Place the coffee grounds in the basket of your percolator or drip coffee maker.

  9. Step 4

Add the required amount of water to make a pot of coffee.

  10. Step 5

Turn the machine on and let the coffee brew.

Tips & Warnings
  • Roasting your own coffee beans will fill your home with the smell of fresh coffee. Home-roasted beans can be kept for several weeks to a month in an airtight container before losing their freshness. A good source for green coffee beans is CoffeeBeanDirect.com, they have dozens varieties of coffee beans available green. You can roast enough coffee beans for the entire week in an hour or so on the weekend. If you don't have a coffee grinder, you can grind your beans in a food processor or blender. Be careful when roasting the coffee beans as they can become burnt and bitter if not constantly stirred during the process. Experiment with several different type of beans to find the blend that makes the perfect cup of coffee for you.
