How to Install a Bathtub Enclosure
A bathtub enclosure can be a wonderful addition to your bathroom. The one-piece unit is extremely popular because it's so easy to clean and provides a sealed environment that is virtually leak proof. They are relatively easy to install if you are just building or have put on an addition. For the most part, they cannot be installed into a constructed home without taking out a wall or two. They are just too big to get through doors and narrow hallways. You will need help lifting the unit into place, but, other than that, the project can be completed by yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure from the floor up to the shower head pipe. Then measure from the front side into the pipe. Do the same for water knob(s) and tub faucet. Transfer these measurements to the tub enclosure. If it is easier for you, use a large piece of cardboard and make a template by putting it on the wall, marking it for the plumbing, and then taping it into the tub enclosure.

2
Using a hole saw, cut the holes in the tub enclosure for the shower head, water knob(s) and faucet. Measure twice, because you can ruin the enclosure by cutting the holes in the wrong places.

-
3
Lift the tub enclosure into the opening with the unit slanting towards you. Set it down on top of the drain assembly, which will be sticking up a bit.
-
4
Check to make sure everything is level, and attach the outer edge with drywall nails to the framing through the pre-drilled holes.
-
5
Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the copper pipe, and screw in the stems for the faucet, knob(s) and shower head. Install the shower head, faucets and knob(s). All shower heads are different: some just screw on, while others have a trim piece, so follow the manufacturer's directions for installation. Knob(s) have a set screw at the bottom that you just need to tighten, and the faucet will either push on and use a set screw or go on with a quarter turn and lock into place. Check and follow the manufacturer's directions for each piece.

6
Run a bead of silicone caulk around the edge of each of the fixtures and smooth down with your finger.
-
7
Place plumber's putty around the bottom of the drain assembly and put it into place. Be generous with the putty so you don't have any leaks, and wipe up the putty that squeezed out. Screw on the screen to top of the drain assembly.
-
8
Once the walls and floors are finished around the tub enclosure, place a bead of silicone caulk around the entire outside of the unit to seal it from any moisture getting behind or under it.
