Things You'll Need:
- New pump Pipe wrench Pipe sealant Contact cement PVC pipe Purple primer PVC cement
-
Step 1
Turn off the electric to the pump and motor from the breaker. Remove the old pump and clean up all the connections that will be used with the new pump.
-
Step 2
Connect the return water line by applying pipe sealant to the threads of the plastic nipple and screw it into the pump intake port.
-
Step 3
Attach remaining joints by applying contact cement to both ends. Slip them together and slightly twist before the contact cement starts to set. This includes the return compression fitting.
-
Step 4
Attach new PVC pipe to the pump from the filter. Use sleeves and elbows to attach the pieces of PVC together. Put purple primer on the ends of the pipe and just inside the edges of the sleeves and elbows and allow it to dry for a few minutes. Apply the PVC glue to the insides of an elbow or sleeve and the ends of the pipe. Push them together and turn slightly. Hold the pipe together until the glue starts to set so it doesn't slip out. Build the new PVC run one pipe at a time.
-
Step 5
Plug in the pump and turn the breaker back on. Check for leaks. If this is not a self-priming pump, make sure to prime the pump right away.
-
Step 6
New energy-efficient pumps have small computers that you will need to set. You will need information like how many gallons of water your pool holds. Read the manufacturer's directions on how to set the computer to reach the maximum energy efficiency.
