How to Kill Bees That Live Underground

If you find evidence of wasps, bees, or hornets nesting underground in your yard, take immediate steps to exterminate these pests. These bees can be aggressive and have been known to attack people or animals without warning who accidentally come upon their nests.
Some people may prefer to hire an exterminator, but if you are willing to study the situation and take a little risk you may be able to exterminate them yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Study the behavior pattern of the bees for several days. This will help you to get an idea of how large the nest is and whether more than one entrance to the hive exists. Also try to determine what kind of bees are in the nest. Yellow-jackets and wasps can be killed very quickly with hornet spray. Hornets will also be exterminated, but they may not die as quickly. Hornets rarely nest in the ground, however.

    • 2

Wait until dark to make sure that all of the bees are in the nest. Place a window screen over the entrance to the nest. If you have determined that there is more than one entrance, completely block any other entrances with large rocks to trap the bees.

    • 3

Spray the hornet spray through the screen into the nest according to manufacturer's directions.

    • 4

Be prepared to run if the bees find a way to escape. Bees generally fly in a straight line. So if you are running from bees, run in a zig-zag pattern.

    • 5

Wait 24 hours and spray again following the same method to make sure that all bees have been exterminated.

    • 6

Smooth out any depression in the ground caused by the nest. It should not be necessary to remove the nest because bees and wasps do not typically nest again in abandoned nests.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you determine through your observations that the nest is very large, consider hiring an exterminator.
