How to Install a USB Port Upgrade Card
When your desktop computer runs out of available USB connections, the number of ports it has can be upgraded using a PCI expansion card. This card slides directly into a slot on the motherboard, and adds as many as four additional ports per card. Users of any skill level can install one of these cards using only a screwdriver, and it takes only a few minutes to do so. Before you begin, you will need to obtain the upgrade card, which can be purchased at most electronics stores.

1
Turn off the computer and unplug it. Remove the two case screws holding the left side panel in place, and slide the panel off. Set it aside, remembering to keep the screws in a safe location where they won't get lost.

2
Locate a PCI slot. These are made of ivory colored plastic, and are located towards the bottom-rear of the motherboard. Directly behind one of the empty slots, remove the metal slot cover by taking out the screw that holds it in place, and sliding the cover directly out. Insert the USB port upgrade card, applying gentle pressure until the card slides completely into place. Reinsert the screw that was just removed, tightening it into place to secure the USB card.

Slide the side panel back on, and insert the two case screws, turning them until they feel tight. Plug the computer back in, and turn it on. Allow it to completely finish starting before moving on to the next step.

Insert the installation CD that came with the card. After the disk has spun up, the installation wizard will automatically appear. Walk through the steps to install the software for the USB card. Once it has finished, the wizard may prompt you to restart your computer. If it does, do so. Once the software is installed, the card is ready to be used.

Tips & Warnings
One simpler alternative to installing an upgrade card is to purchase an external USB hub, which splits one port into several, at the sacrifice of reduced performance.
