How to Build an Airplane Model

Building model airplanes is a hobby that can provide many hours of enjoyment. Ranging in complexity from simple snap-together models to extremely detailed scale models with working flaps and landing gear, airplane model building is suitable for a vast age range, from young child to adult.

Instructions

1. Select a model appropriate for the age and skill level of the builder.

2. Chose a work area where your model will be undisturbed while waiting for painted pieces to dry.

3. Remove pieces from the parts trees and trim casting sprues. Smooth any rough edges from the casting process. Be careful not to remove any locating pins or details from the pieces. A model knife, such as an Xacto, is perfect for this work.

4. Paint any pieces that would be difficult to paint after assembly. Use care to avoid painting surfaces where glue will be applied. It is a good idea to test fit everything before painting to be sure you know where the glue will be applied. When it's possible to do so, one method to hold smaller pieces to paint is to place them on a toothpick. A tag with a number corresponding to the number on the direction sheet can be applied to the toothpick to help identify the part for assembly. The toothpick can then be inserted in a piece of Styrofoam to hold the part upright to dry.

5. After the paint has completely dried, assemble the model in the order indicated by the direction sheet. Use a good quality model cement and allow plenty of time for the assemblies to dry. Hurrying here can ruin a model.

6. Display your model. Models can be displayed on a stand, which will be provided in most kits, or they can sit on their landing gear. Some people hang models from the ceiling using monofilament fishing line to give the illusion that the airplane is in flight.
