1
Determine if you will establish a company or freelance. Many personal trainers work independently as freelancers while others establish a business and train under a business name. Usually the latter is preferred for individuals that plan to hire additional trainers to work with or plan to expand their company. Personal trainers do have the option to start out working freelance, and then proceed to establishing their own personal training company.

2
Find a facility. You will need somewhere to work out and train your clients. Most personal trainers either go to their client's home or their local gym to meet and train them. Few have their own facility to where clients come to train. Just make sure that if you are going to local gyms to help clients train the gym is fine with it and doesn't prohibit non-employees from training in their facility.

Choose a specialty or population to train. There are a wide variety of people that seek the services of a personal trainer. You can choose to work with a specific population to train such as the elderly or moms. You also may choose to specialize in a particular area, such as weight loss, strength training or marathon training.

Learn how to establish workout programs. Each person you work with will have different strengths and weaknesses as well as different needs. You should be able to customize workout plans for each individual to help them achieve goals. You can learn how to cater workout plans through taking classes in exercise science or kinesiology at your local college.

5
Seek out certification. There are a number of different personal training organizations that offer certification. The most commonly recognized certification is given by the National Board of Fitness Examiners. You can find out what exactly you need to do to register for the exam as well as what you can expect by visiting its website.

6
Learn how to motivate people. While it is important to know how to properly train people in fitness, it is just as important to be able to motivate them and inspire them. This is especially true if you are working with individuals who are losing weight and may not have the motivation to keep themselves on track to achieve their goals.

Market and advertise your services. In order to get clients requesting your services, it is important that you market and advertise them. There are a number of different ways this can be done, but you may find it most beneficial to connect with local gyms that don't offer personal trainers of their own for their clientele. You can work a set number of hours a week providing services for the gym or simply set up an office at the gym where people can seek out your services if desired.
