How to Install a Power Steering Pump on a Mustang

Save

A Mustang's power steering pump is the heart of its power steering system. The pump is the fluid's delivery system. Without a property functioning pump, the steering components which rely on the steering fluid will not function properly. Follow the steps below to install a Mustang's power steering pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench Small hose clamp Flathead screwdriver
  • Position the power steering pump behind the pump's bracket so that the pump rests against the back of the bracket.

  • Install the pump's bolts through the front of the pump's bracket and into the pump. Do not tighten these bolts yet.

  • Slide the power steering belt over the pump's pulley.

  • Pull the power steering pump away from the engine to tighten the belt. Then tighten the pump's bolts with a wrench while keeping tension on the belt.

  • Connect the pressure hose to the back of the pump. There are two hoses which attach to the back of the pump. The pressure hose is the larger of the two hoses, and has a nut on the end of the hose. To connect the pressure hose, slide the nut on the end of the hose onto the threaded outlet on the back of the pump, then tighten the nut on the end of the hose with a wrench.

  • Slide a small hose clamp over the fluid return hose. The fluid return hose is the smaller of the two hoses which attach to the rear of the pump.

  • Slide the fluid return hose over the nipple located at the back of the pump just under the pressure hose.

  • Slide the hose clamp to the end of the fluid return hose where the hose meets the pump, then tighten the clamp with a flathead screwdriver.

  • Withdraw the pump's dipstick and pour power steering fluid into the pump's dipstick tube. The dipstick tube is located at the back of the pump. Once fluid has been added to the pump, insert the dipstick into the dipstick tube.

  • Start the Mustang's engine, then turn the steering wheel to the extreme right, then to the extreme left several time.

  • Turn the engine off.

  • Withdraw the dipstick tube to check the fluid level. The fluid level should be between the "Add" and "Full" marks located at the tip of the dipstick.

  • Add additional fluid if necessary.
