How to Make Your Own Vented Subwoofer Enclosure

Vented subwoofer enclosures have one big advantage over sealed subwoofer enclosures---the subwoofer plays louder. The vent in the subwoofer enclosure reinforces the flow of air from the subwoofer and increases the volume of your music. So, if you're looking for a bigger thump from your sub, and don't mind doing some work yourself, making your own vented subwoofer enclosure is a great project. With a little bit of planning and some basic carpentry, you can be rocking down the road in no time.

Start by deciding on the size of your vented subwoofer enclosure. Your subwoofer's manual will cite specs for the volume of the enclosure it should be in, as well as the diameter and length of the port tube used in a vented subwoofer enclosure. Note the volume requirement for your enclosure. Then sketch out a few designs for your box, taking into account the size of the sub and the amount of space in your car. Multiply together the length, width and height of the enclosure in inches, and divide the number you come up with by 1728. This will be the volume, in cubic feet, of your planned enclosure. Modify the box dimensions, if necessary, to come up with a figure that matches the subs requirements. This will be your box's size.

Using a circular saw and 3/4 inch MDF (medium density fiberboard), cut out the front, rear, bottom and top panels of your box. In the front panel, cut an opening for the subwoofer to fit into and check the size. In the top panel, cut an opening for your port tube and check the opening size to be sure it fits. Now put together the panels, using carpenter's wood glue and wood screws.

Cut the end panels for the box. In one end panel, cut an opening for your terminal cup. Put the end panels on, using wood glue and wood screws. When the box is completed, seal the joints with silicone sealant to ensure an airtight box.

Cover the box in box carpet if you wish. Use a hot glue gun to glue down the carpet as you lay the pieces.

Insert your port tube into the opening on the top. Glue it in place with the hot glue gun. Place the terminal cup in, secured with wood screws and connect a piece of speaker wire from the back to the terminals of the subwoofer. Now place the subwoofer into the opening and mount it with wood screws.
