How to Replace Computer Battery

Before replacing the CMOS battery in your computer you will want to verify that it is bad. Leave the computer on for at least 24 hours to see if the battery recharges. In many cases this can fix BIOS issues in itself. If you find the internal clock and date settings are incorrect, or you are getting BIOS errors on boot-up, then it may be time to change the CMOS battery.

1. Write down your BIOS information. Go into your BIOS and write down all of the information in it. The link at the end of this page will take you to a site that will aid you in accessing your BIOS. There are several different ways to enter the BIOS depending on your computer type.

2. Find the CMOS battery. In order to do this you will have to open the computer case. Check the computer documentation on how to enter the computer case and where the CMOS is.

3. Remove the battery. The CMOS battery should be in a small container. Simply reach in and grab the battery and pull. It will pop right out. If the container has a clip, then unclip the battery first and then pull it out.

4. Take the battery to the computer store where you are going to purchase the new CMOS. This way you know you will get the exact same battery.

5. Add the new battery into the CMOS battery container and close the computer.

6. Enter the BIOS and reconfigure the CMOS with the settings that you previously wrote down.

Tips & Warnings

• Anytime you are working inside a computer you need to be aware of ESD (electro static discharge). Once you open the computer case, be sure to touch the metal frame of the computer to remove any possible static electricity from yourself. This will protect internal components from being damaged.
