To try your hand at making acrylic resin rings, you'll need raw materials, molds and embellishments, plus a little patience as you master the art of compounding resin and shaping it into beautiful finger jewelry.

Purchase a ring mold from a craft store or check the link at the end of the article for an online source. These are relatively inexpensive and can be used repeatedly, so don't buy more than one to start.

Don a dust mask and make sure the area in which you are mixing the silicone compound for the ring is well ventilated. You'll be working with a medium that has a very unpleasant odor--it's sticky, too, so you will also want to wear rubber gloves.

Purchase resin compound from a craft supplier (see Resources). Read the directions on the package of the resin compound you've chosen to make your ring(s). You will be required to combine two agents to achieve the proper consistency, so make certain the hardener (catalyst) required to set up the material is packaged with the compound. If it isn't, purchase the catalyst separately. Find additional hardening agents when you visit the supply site.

Pour a mixed layer of the resin compound into the mold and allow it to harden per package instructions. When the compound is firm, peel off the mold. This produces clear, embellishment-free rings. Clean the mold with a soft toothbrush to remove residue that may remain in behind. If you need to clean up your hands or crafting area, use acetone (nail polish remover) to do the job.

Create rings with faux gems and/or adornments, if desired. Place the decorative element(s) into the ring mold first, then pour the resin compound over the embellishment. Tap lightly on a table to discourage air bubbles from forming. Allow the ring to harden before stripping off the mold and brushing it clean.

Make a ring with "floating elements" by sandwiching decorations between two layers of compound. This is done by pouring one layer into the mold, then allowing it to set up for half an hour. Gently add the elements. Slide a second layer of resin compound into the mold and fill it to the top. Tap to break air bubbles. Remove from the mold and you will find the middle layer of stones or embellishments to be "floating" inside the ring.

Experiment by adding acrylic dyes to small batches of resin compound, then pour into ring molds to craft colorful rings.

Consider donning protective eye wear when working with resins in addition to a dust mask and gloves. For faster drying results, purchase and try out a gel promoter to set the silicone in a matter of minutes. Compounds and catalysts have finite shelf lives, so keep raw materials in a cool place and adhere to expiration dates on the package. Unless you're producing huge numbers of rings, buy small quantities of raw materials to maintain freshness.
