Instructions

  1. Cut Pieces for the Scrub Hat

    • 1

Cut the body of the hat. The body piece is a slightly rounded rectangle, 24 inches by 11.5 inches. Fold this piece in half (right sides together) so that it measures 12 inches by 11.5 inches.

    • 2

Cut the headband. This piece is a rectangle, 5 inches by 25.5 inches.

    • 3

Cut the ties. The ties are two 5-inch-by-36-inch strips of fabric .

    Sew the Hat

    • 4

Begin with the folded body piece. With the folded edge on the left side, lightly gather from the upper folded edge (approximately 1 inch from the top) around the entire folded edge, along the bottom, and up the right side, stopping approximately 3 inches from the top. Pull the gathers up only slightly. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Sew a seam from the folded edge, down, and around the lower edge (the brim of the hat). Turn to the right side and press.

    • 6

Fold the headband lengthwise with right sides facing each other. With a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew along the length of the headband. Turn the headband out and press.

    • 7

Pin the headband to the right side of the hat, matching both centers.

    • 8

Sew the headband to the hat. Turn it right-side out and press the seam toward the hat.

    • 9

Fold the tie pieces in half lengthwise with the right sides together. Pin and sew the ties along one short edge and the long raw edge. Turn it to the right side, and press well.

    • 10

Find the raw, open edges on each side of the headband. Turn under the raw edges and insert a tie into each end. Stitch each tie in place into the headband to finish the hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • With a little trial and error, this hat could be adapted to fit larger or smaller heads.
