How To Install Cable Modem Drivers

As of 2008, more than 220 million people were using the Internet. For these 220 million people, there are also many different Internet providers in the United States. Cable Internet is one of the more popular media avenues for delivering Internet to the broad range of users. To access cable Internet, you must have a device called a cable modem that must be attached to your cable television's coaxial cable. The cable modem's more traditional setup deals with transmitting and receiving a signal that computers can understand through an ethernet cable. However, people who do not have an ethernet port on their computer can still use the Internet through a USB port.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cable modem software CD
  1. Step 1

Plug the cable modem into the computer via the USB port. You may have to reboot your computer if it does not automatically register that new hardware has been plugged into the computer. Once the modem is recognized, the computer will ask for a software CD in order to continue the installation.

  2. Step 2

Insert the CD that came with your cable modem and then click the "Next" button. The computer will look on the CD for the proper drivers.

  3. Step 3

Install the drivers once the computer finds them by pressing the "Next" button to continue. Different modems have different instructions to install their drivers, but the software will guide you through the installation process. Some systems will simply install the proper driver.

  4. Step 4

    Reboot the computer (if necessary.)

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have the original CD that came with your cable modem, contact your cable Internet provider. Their contact information will probably be on the CD case or envelope. This situation is only valid for cable modems that are hooked up to computers through a USB port. Cable Modems do not need drivers if they are hooked up through an ethernet card.
  • Cable modems cannot have both ethernet and USB ports filled because they will interfere with each other and none of the ports will get Internet. If you have to move the computer, make sure that the USB cable is plugged back into its original location or you will have to reinstall drivers again.
