How to Make a Cool Flash Card
When your child is first learning how to read, there are a number of ways you can help. One tried-and-true method is to create Flash Cards. Your child will enjoy your craftiness and get to learn new letters and words in the process.

1
Get two colors of flash cards--one color for vowels and one color for consonants. Take your marker and write a letter on each index card, making sure to use the right color index card. Your letter should be written with the index card in a vertical position, and your letter should be written big enough to take up the top half of the card.

Next, search through your magazines for pictures that start with each letter. On your "A" index card, for example, you could use an apple. You will want the pictures to be easily recognizable for a young child. Cut out a picture for every letter of the alphabet.

After cutting out the pictures for each letter, glue them on to the bottom half of the corresponding index card. Allow glue to dry overnight.

Tips & Warnings
You can make your flash cards really cool by adding extra decorative touches, such as glitter, or by using puff paint to write the letters instead of a marker.
When your child has learned all of the letters of the alphabet, you can make these same type of flash cards using words instead of letters.
Allow your child to help make the flash cards to get them engaged and excited about learning to read.
