Things You'll Need:

  • Business Plan Budget
  1. Step 1

Research the grant you've been considering. Many grants have specific criteria to determine which businesses are eligible based on income, employee numbers, location and industry type, for example. Many grants limit how the allocated funds may be used. It's always a good idea to determine if the grant is a good match for your business and its needs.

  2. Step 2

Be transparent when completing the grant application. Do not hide anything; always be honest. Produce your business budget, business plan and any other financial information the grant application may request.

  3. Step 3

Follow all instructions closely when filling out the grant application. Sometimes a simple mistake on the application can cause the entire application to be discarded and not be considered for funding. Review the application several times before completing it. Also, double check the application when you're finished.

  4. Step 4

Get advice. Always contact the agency, department or organization distributing the grant before submitting your grant application. Typically, there is a "point person" appointed to address all concerns and questions about the grant application process. This person's job is to help you; take advantage of her knowledge and expertise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Locate past recipients of the grant to get their perspectives on applying for the business grant. They may have great insight for you.
  • Never lie or misrepresent your business in an application.
