How to Transfer Files From a DVR to a Memory Stick

A movie file on a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) can be transferred to any computer memory stick, but not directly. Especially not if you're using the memory stick with other media like QuickTime, Media Player or a PSP. The DVR file format won't be read on any other program. You'll need more than just a video capture device to transfer the file to your computer. You also need a program to convert the file to your needed format.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a video capture device and a video editing/conversion software program onto your computer. The software should be able to convert to many file formats, such as MPEG, WMV and MP4. Look for a video capture card with a FireWire connection so you can keep a USB port available.

    • 2

Hook up the DVR to the video capture card. Use the best cable connection possible, meaning use an HDMI cable if the ports are available. Try RCA composite cables next (with red, green and blue plugs). If nothing else is available, go with composite cables (yellow, white and red).

    • 3

Connect the device containing the memory stick to your computer through a USB cable. If the memory stick has its own USB connector, plug the stick directly into the computer. The memory stick should appear on your computer as an extra hard drive.

    • 4

Open the video-editing program on your computer. Play the video on your DVR, and begin recording the video on the computer program. The exact recording process can vary depending on the program, so read over the program's instructions.

    • 5

Convert the saved movie file into the format you want saved on the memory stick. MPEG is the most common format, but devices like a PSP require MP4. Again, read over your software program's instructions for its specific conversion steps.

    • 6

Locate the saved and converted movie file and your memory stick on the computer. Drag the file icon to the memory stick to copy the file to it.
