Scratches can often ruin a valuable piece of software, causing a $50 Wii game to become a drink coaster. By backing up a Wii game by placing files onto a DVD-R, it will allow a fully usable backup version of the game to be placed on a DVD. The intention of this is a legal way to back up a Wii game. However, some people also use this method to download Wii ISO files and play free games rather than buying them.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer DVD burner ImgBurn, free burning software ISO file Nintendo Wii Modified Nintendo Wii chip Blank DVD-R
  1. Step 1

Download the Wii game of your choice from any ISO-providing website and ensure you run a virus scan on it after its completion. Ensure that the file being downloaded is an ISO or disk image that will be readable by a modified Wii system.

  2. Step 2

Insert the blank DVD-R into the DVD burner and open the ISO burning program. A free suggested program is ISOburn, which is a simple tool to burn ISO files properly onto a DVD-R so a modified Wii system can read it.

  3. Step 3

Select the mode "Write" and then select the option where it's asking for a source. Select the downloaded ISO file from the hard drive. If there is an option asking if you would like to mount the image, you don't need it.

  4. Step 4

Select the "Burn" option at the bottom of the program. This should start the burning process. After it's complete, the DVD burning drive should automatically open the drive to release the freshly burned DVD-R.

  5. Step 5

Insert the DVD-R copy of the game you have just finished burning into the Wii. It should appear in the Wii menu like any other normal Wii game.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wiid and Wiikey are two of the suggested mod chips to enable DVD playback in the Wii system. To play any DVD-R Wii games in the Wii system, a mod chip is required. Use DVD-R's, not DVD+R, as they do not cause a buildup on the Wii's laser disc reader.
  • Be careful when downloading ISO files; some may contain viruses. Downloading of ISO files to play games you do not own may be considered illegal. Modding a Wii requires technical experience. First-timers may damage the system.
