How to Make Your Own AOL Icon

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) offers freedom and convenience in communication, so why not take it all the way by making a customized icon? It's a great way to individualize your AOL experience. You can replace the system's stock icons in just a few minutes by following some simple steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • AOL Instant Messenger
  1. Step 1

    Go to the AOL Instant Messenger website (see Resources) and sign into your account. You can also open AIM directly from your desktop. When the AIM window launches, sign into your account.

  2. Step 2

    In the AIM Edit menu, click on "Settings."

  3. Step 3

    Click on the "Expressions" tab inside the "Settings" section.

  4. Step 4

    Choose "Browse" to find a picture from your computer. Select that pic and click "OK." Your new icon will be created for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buddy icons are 48 by 48 pixels in size. In most cases, your selected image will automatically be res-ized to fit, but if it is too large, the system will tell you it can't use the image you uploaded. In that case, you will have to crop or re-size the photo yourself.
