This article explains how to throw a big breaking overhand curveball. There are different types of curveballs to throw depending on the situation. If the pitcher is trying to get a swinging strike he might throw a sharp, tighter short-armed curveball that breaks out of the strike zone. However, pitchers who are trying to throw a curveball for a strike or who are trying to freeze the batter may rather throw an overhand curveball. Knowing how to throw different types of curveballs and what situation to throw them in can help a pitcher succeed no matter who he is facing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the stitches on the baseball that appears to create two parallel lines.

  2. Step 2

Put your index finger and middle finger together so there is no gap in between them.

  3. Step 3

Put your two fingers from step 2 on the white section of the baseball between the two stitches you located in step 1.

  4. Step 4

Place your thumb on the side of the ball opposite your fingers from step 3. Looking at the baseball, your grip should appear to make a backward "C."

  5. Step 5

Throw the baseball to the catcher with the proper motion. You should have a more over the top delivery with your arm coming down over your head. When you release the ball you should rotate your hand so your thumb is now above your two fingers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to practice using the right amount of pressure on the grip. If you grip it too tight the ball could come out too flat and just spin. Gripping the ball too loosely can allow the ball to slip out of your hand and not break properly.
