How to Install DSL Telephone Modems
Making the transition from dial-up to high speed Internet can be exciting. However, it can also be a daunting process for people who are not familiar with computers and networks. The devices that are used for high speed Internet, like the DSL modem, are easy to use and usually do not require any special configuration by the user. You just plug the devices in, and you are ready to go.
Things You'll Need
- DSL Modem
- Ethernet Cable
- Open Ethernet Port on your computer
- Internet service from an ISP

Place your DSL modem in a safe place, close to a phone jack and close to a computer. It also needs to be in a place where air can circulate around it to ensure it does not overheat.

Install the power cord for the DSL modem, plugging it into the wall. The device will turn on automatically and lights may begin to flash on the modem.

Attach a standard phone cable from the DSL modem to the phone jack in the wall. This will usually make additional lights flash on the modem.

Attach an Ethernet cable to the port on the back of the DSL modem. The net light should turn on.

Attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to the port on your computer. A light next to the port should light up and you should be ready to use the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
You can place your modem a long distance from your computer, but you will have to have a long wire running across the room.
If you cannot connect to the Internet right away, turn your computer off and then back on to initialize the networking sequence.
Do not use a DSL filter on the phone line connecting to your modem.
