How to Disconnect a Propane Heating Stove

Victoria Hatlaban

If you want to replace your propane heating stove or simply remove it for a remodeling project, you first need to disconnect it from the wall. Disconnecting the stove is a quick and simple task and doing it yourself can save money. However, proper precautions must be taken, because exposure to propane gas is dangerous. If you're not sure of yourself, call a professional to help.

  1. Shut off the gas line. Close the valve, which in most cases is located in your basement or at the tank outside your house.

  2. Move the unit away from the wall. The flexible metal hose that connects your stove to the supply pipe in the wall is usually pretty short, but you should be able to pull it away enough for you to access the necessary plugs and valves. Avoid scratching up your floor by laying down a mat or towel. Tilt the stove slightly to one side, then the other, to slip the mat or towel beneath the stove legs.

  3. Unplug the stove from the wall.

  4. Switch the gas valve to the "off" position. When it is off, the valve should lie perpendicular to the pipe (in the "on" position, the valve runs the same direction as the pipe). If you smell gas, your valve may be faulty. Get out of the building and call 911.

  5. Disconnect the metal flex hose that runs from the wall to the stove. Unscrew the connection at the adapter above the shut-off valve.
