Building Your Wood Shed
-
1
The area on which you choose to build your wood shed first has to prepared. Make sure the area is solid ground and is also reasonably level. Level ground is easiest to work with, but if there is slight height variation, level the area with wood or brick support posts.
-
2
When the area is ready, it is time to cut the 6-by-8s for the base of your shed. Take the five 6-by-8 boards and lay them out. Leave two pieces at 14 feet long and cut three pieces so they are 9 feet long.
-
-
3
Pressure treat the base to prevent rot.
-
4
Put the floor frame together on top of your prepared and leveled area with penny nails. Nail the 9-foot long pieces between the 14-foot long pieces at each end and the remaining 9-foot long piece in the center for floor support.
-
5
Take the two 5-foot by 10-foot pieces of plywood and nail them down to the base for the floor. Lay them so that the 10-foot side of the plywood matches the 10-foot side of the base. Cut the remaining 5-by-10 down to 4-by-10, and nail it to the uncovered spot of the floor. The floor is now perfectly covered.
-
6
It's time to build the framing for the walls. The walls should be at least 7 feet tall to allow for head room. Decide if you want your door on the 10-foot long side or the longer side. Plan for a 4-foot wide by 7-foot high space for your door and incorporate that into your frame plans. Use two 2-by-4s side by side on each side and along the top of the door.
-
7
To make a frame for the 14-foot long side, build a 14-foot by 7-foot square out of 2-by-4s and nail it together. Next, cut additional pieces of 2-by-4 to fit vertically between the top and bottom 14-foot pieces and space them 8 inches apart. For the 10-foot walls, build them 9 feet 8 inches long because the edges of the 14-foot walls will add 4 inches.
-
8
After all four walls are framed, stand them up and nail them together. Nail them to the base about every 6 inches and to each other about every 4 inches.
-
9
When building the roof, it is important for it to be slightly slanted to allow for water runoff. Choose the position of the slope for your roof, and cut a 2-by-4 to expand the length of the shed parallel to the slope. Nail it across the top of the shed in the middle.
-
10
Cut and nail sheets of plywood to form the roof and nail to the frame up to the 2-by-4, forming an A-frame. The roof should expand at least 6 inches past each edge of the shed.
-
11
Cover the outside of the walls with 1/2" plywood and then brush with waterproof sealant. Also cover the floor with sealant.
-
12
Use tin to cover the roof for protection. Cut the pieces accordingly and nail to the roof.
-
13
If you want a door, see if you can have plastic doors cut to fit, or build your own using the framing technique. Hang with hinges.
