It's easy to turn plain white roller shades into something interesting when you use colorful decorator fabric and a few household tools. It's inexpensive, too, because you can remove the white shade and reuse the roller.

Things You'll Need:

  • Old roller shade or shade kit Fusible interfacing Scissors/rolling blade Seam sealant Stapler Decorator fabric Wooden slat Fabric tape

    Making Shade

  1. Step 1

Measure the inside dimensions of your window. Most window shades are mounted inside the frame; if you prefer to mount yours outside, measure the outside dimensions including the top and bottom frame. Add 12 inches to the length and 2 inches to the width of your measurements.

  2. Step 2

Choose your fabric and interfacing. Fuse-A-Shade brand interfacing is sold in fabric stores and online. Fusible interfacing provides a stabilizing element to your fabric, and is convenient because it's an iron-on product.

  3. Step 3

Cut the fabric and interfacing according to your measurements.

  4. Step 4

Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric. Turn it over and iron the right side of the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Remove the shade attached to the old roller. If you prefer to start with a fresh roller, there are roller kits available at home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowes.

  6. Finishing Up

  7. Step 1

Trim the fabric to suit the size of the roller. To do this, measure the roller, but do not include the external metal pins on each end. The width of your shade should be one eighth of an inch less than the length of the roller measurement. Trim with a rolling blade or straight edge, and protect the edges against fraying by sealing them with fabric sealant.

  8. Step 2

Fold the bottom edge up by 1 1/2 inches, large enough to insert a wooden slat. Seal the fold with stitching or use iron-on tape. Insert the slat.

  9. Step 3

Roll up the shade and hang it in your window

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider which direction the shade will fall before you staple it to the top portion of the barrel.
