Motorola cable modems, like most other cable modems, offer both USB and Ethernet installation options. While both types function well, it seems as though Ethernet is the preferred mode of connectivity. This article will explain how to install a Motorola cable modem using either a USB or Ethernet cable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Attach the coaxial, or "cable," line to the rear of the modem. The picture in the example illustrates what a coaxial cable looks like. The Motorola modem should come with an extra coaxial line for you to use. If not, they can be purchased inexpensively at any electronics store. The cable will screw on to the modem after inserting the small wire into the center of the port on the modem.

  2. Step 2

Attach the opposite end of the coaxial cable to the port on the wall. You might need to use a splitter if you plan to have both a modem and cable television in the same room. Some Motorola modems come with a splitter, but you can also purchase one for next to nothing at any electronics store. The side of the splitter with one post should connect to the wall port, while the opposite ends will be for the coaxial cables that go to your modem and television.

  3. Step 3

Choose whether you want to use USB or Ethernet connectivity. You should use only one.

  4. Step 4

Insert one end of either the USB or Ethernet cable into the appropriate port on the modem.

  5. Step 5

Insert the other end of cable into the corresponding port on your computer.

  6. Step 6

Insert the power cord into the modem, and then into an electrical outlet. While most cable modems are always "on," Motorola cable modems have a power switch on top of them.

  7. Step 7

    Turn the modem on.

  8. Step 8

Put the installation disc into the appropriate drive on your computer. Follow the instructions from your cable Internet service provider. Call your provider's help desk if you encounter any installation problems.
