Purchase balloons of various sizes and colors. Keep in mind the theme of your event and choose colors that compliment your other decorations. As a general rule, allow for approximately four to six balloons per square foot of your arch. For example, for a balloon arch that is 24 feet long you will need 96-144 balloons.

    • 2

Blow up enough balloons, either by air pump or helium, to make a large enough balloon arch for your occasion.

    • 3

Use the smaller balloons along with the larger balloons to create clusters to make your balloon arch more interesting and festive. Alternating the color of each balloon can also add to the eye-appeal.

    • 4

Identify a pattern, both by color and size, for your balloons to follow before stringing the entire arch.

    • 5

Anchor one side of the arch, for helium balloons, with bricks, water bottles or paint cans before adhering the balloons to the line. Don't forget to hide or decorate the anchors so they don't stand out.

    • 6

Tie the pattern of balloons onto the fishing wire, for helium balloons, or piping, for air balloons, until the arch is large enough to serve its intended purpose. Be sure to keep an eye on how your design is unfolding while you are stringing the balloons to ensure the finished product will be what you desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind when choosing whether to use air balloons or helium that there are pros and cons to each. Although helium balloons are easier to use for balloon arches, they only last on average 12-24 hours. Air balloons make it more difficult to make a balloon arch due to the fact they need more support, but they generally last for several days.
