Over time, a fuel injector can become clogged with dirt and debris. This results in unpleasant side effects such as reduced fuel efficiency and dirty emissions. If the fuel injector becomes excessively clogged, it will likely cause your vehicle to fail state emissions tests. To solve the problem, you could simply purchase a new fuel injector. However, taking a few minutes to clean your current fuel injector may be a more cost-effective way to improve the performance of your vehicle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fuel injector cleaning kit
  1. Step 1

With the engine off, open up your vehicle's hood and find the fuel injector. If you are unsure where to look, consult an engine guide for your particular vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the fuel lines. This eliminates the possibility of fuel being pumped into the engine during the cleaning process.

  3. Step 3

Connect the pressurized cleaner to the fuel injector as dictated by the fuel injector cleaning kit instructions.

  4. Step 4

Start the engine and allow the pressurized cleaner to flow through the fuel injector.

  5. Step 5

After 10 or 15 minutes, shut off the engine and disconnect the pressurized canister. Also, reroute the fuel lines to their original position. Your fuel injector should now be considerably cleaner.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pressurized solvent is both acidic and flammable. It is suggested that you wear rubber goggles and gloves and avoid working in areas with sparks or flames.
