Performing certain operations on an iPod can be confusing because the buttons are not labeled and you don't always know what they will do. Furthermore, there are really two different versions of "Off" on your iPod. One is more like putting your iPod to sleep, the way you put a computer to sleep or into standby mode, and the other is turning it completely off.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Observe whether your iPod is already turned on. Locate the on/off switch at the top of the iPod near the headphone jack. If it is switched with the red visible, it is off. If it is switched with the white visible it is on, even if the screen is blank.

  2. Step 2

Look at the screen to determine if your iPod is awake. If you are watching a video or listening to music and can see anything on the screen, even if it has dimmed, your iPod is on and awake.

  3. Step 3

Depress the button on the bottom of the click wheel until the screen goes blank. Your iPod is now in sleep mode. This mode will continue to drain the battery, which is why you want to turn it completely off.

  4. Step 4

Toggle the on/off switch to off. You'll know you've done this successfully if the red is visible. If you switch your iPod off without putting it to sleep it could cause problems that affect the memory. Turning it off also prevents the iPod from accidentally waking up when you're not using it.

  5. Step 5

Slide the on/off switch in the reverse direction to turn your iPod back on then press any button on it. It will reawaken in a few seconds.
