How to Decorate a Large Wall

Decorating a large wall can be intimidating to even the most experienced interior decorator or home stager. The most novice of decorators will shudder as they stare at those large walls, wondering what to do with them. A large wall can be a lot of fun to decorate when you use your creativity and personal flair to create a space that is your own.

Instructions

1. Paint your large wall a neutral, warm color. Creams, soft yellows and taupe work well. You can create sections on your large wall and paint each section a different color. Vertical sections will draw the eye upward and horizontal sections will make the eye look side to side.

2. Arrange your furniture to accentuate your large wall. Place larger furniture perpendicular to the wall to create a separate space. Vary the height of the furniture. Use bulky furniture such as pianos and entertainment centers to take up as much space of a large wall as possible.

3. Use wall art and decorations on your large walls. Group similar items together. Use frames that are alike for photos or paintings. Depth and dimension can be added to the large wall by using shadow boxes. Vary the sizes of the wall art to create visual interest.

4. Add lighting to your large wall. Floor lamps, inset lighting and simple chandeliers hanging close to the walls will highlight the wall art and decorations used. Lighting will also help create shadows that will add dimension to the large wall.

5. Create a faux fireplace by painting one on your large wall. Kits for faux fireplaces are also available at home improvement and decorating stores. Remember to add fireplace accessories to make your faux fireplace look more real.
