If the light bulb burns out from the back of your laptop, or if your laptop screen is scratched and needs to be replaced, you can perform the repair yourself by taking apart the laptop screen with some basic tools. The laptop screen is one of the most delicate components of every notebook computer, so you need to be very careful when using sharp objects and tools. However, the process is simple and doing it yourself can save you money from repair shop costs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flathead screwdriver Small four-pointed screwdriver Paper towel or thin cloth
  1. Step 1

Remove the screw covers. The number and size of the screw covers varies by model of the laptop, but you will find them on the border of the screen. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully push out the screw covers and set them aside.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the laptop screen screws. Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws located under the screw covers. Remove the screws on the base of the screen first, then the top.

  3. Step 3

Remove the screen bezel. The laptop screen bezel is the thin frame holding the screen in place; if your laptop does not have a bezel, proceed to Step 4. Carefully lift this frame with your fingers by pressing down firmly on the inside corners of the bezel and lifting out. The bezel typically snaps off very easily and does not require a lot of pressure to move.

  4. Step 4

Remove the LCD frame screws. Pull the LCD screen slightly forward so you can see the small screws around the sides of the screen secured to the metal brackets. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the bottom, then the top screws on the metal brackets.

  5. Step 5

Pull the screen forward. Protect your laptop screen by laying a clean paper towel or clean cloth on the screen, then pull it forward and down so that you can see the back of the screen and wiring.

  6. Step 6

Remove the video cable. Lift up the piece of tape that secures the video cable to the back of the LCD screen; you can slide the cable right out of the video connector with your fingers. Remove the tape at the bottom of the laptop screen to remove the video connector cable completely.

  7. Step 7

Disable the inverter plug. Pull the white inverter plug out of the inverter at the base of the laptop screen. This will completely free up the screen from the base of the notebook for easy removal.
