How to Paint Brass Light Fixtures

Painting brass light fixtures is a simple alteration that can change the look of a room entirely. Although the look of brass is quite nice, sometimes a good change can give a room the fresh start it needs--or perhaps brass no longer fits with the décor. Rather than buying new light fixtures, it's a much cheaper alternative to transform the previous ones into something worth a second look. Just be ready to apply many coats of primer first.

• Liquid TSP Soft clean cloth Cardboard box Spray paint primer Spray paint for metal

Instructions

1. Clean the light fixture to remove any dust, grease or grime. Liquid TSP works quite well on brass and can be bought at the hardware store.

2. Allow the fixture to dry completely.

3. Place the fixture in a cardboard box to avoid making a mess. Spray the fixture thoroughly with an oil-based spray paint primer. Apply five to 10 thin coats of primer and allow it to dry completely. Thick coats of primer may result in drip marks on the surface.

4. Apply a spray paint designed for metal in the chosen color. Apply several thin coats until the desired look is reached, allowing the fixture to dry between coats.

Tips & Warnings

• It's recommended to do this outside or in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves, older clothes and protective glasses.
