Play the Minor Blues Scale V for Guitar

The minor blues scale V begins on the penultimate note of the blues scale, with the root located on the second note of the scale. Learning to play this scale on guitar, along with the other four blues scales, will allow you to play the blues in any position over the entire fretboard.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

  4. Step 4

Place your left-hand ring finger on the third fret of the fifth string. Pluck the note with your right hand.

  10. Step 10

Place your left-hand index finger on the first fret of the second string. Pluck the note with your right hand.

  11. Step 11

Place your left-hand middle finger on the second fret of the second string. Pluck the note with your right hand.

  12. Step 12

Place your left-hand index finger on the first fret of the first string. Pluck the note with your right hand.

  14. Step 14

Place your left-hand ring finger on the third fret of the first string. Pluck the note with your right hand.

  15. Step 15

Play all fourteen notes in a row to produce a G minor blues scale V.

  16. Step 16

Practice playing the minor blues scale V in different keys along the sixth string. The second note of the scale is the root, which indicates the key. For example, if you started this scale on the fifth fret, the root would fall on the seventh fret and therefore it would be a B-minor blues scale V.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learning to quickly name the root of the scale (the second note) will allow you to not only learn the fingering but be able to apply the scale to a musical situation.
