How to Make a Restaurant High Chair Cover

Placing a baby into a high chair at a restaurant can be a little unsettling if you've ever noticed how dirty these high chairs can get. To protect your little one from dirt and germs, many parents like to place a cover onto the high chair. With basic skills and supplies, you can make a high chair cover in an hour. This will fit a standard wooden high chair with dimensions of 12 inches by 13 inches by 8 inches.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three rectangles of fabric to these dimensions:
      1 rectangle: 14 inches by 39 inches
      2 rectangles: 10 inches by 13 inches

    • 2

Lay the large rectangle out flat in front of you with a short end on top to figure out the placement of the leg holes and strap slits.

    • 3

Figure the leg hole positions. These will be two 4-inch by 4-inch squares.
Measure down 13 inches from the top of the large rectangle. Mark this measurement on both side edges of the rectangle with the fabric pen. Measure in two inches from each side from the 13-inch mark and mark this spot. Now measure over another 4 inches from the last measurement (this will be 6 inches in from each side) and mark this spot. Draw a horizontal line to connect the 2-inch mark and the 6-inch mark. Measure four inches up from this horizontal line from each end mark. Draw lines to connect the first line with these last two marks. Draw one more horizontal line to make two squares. Cut along your marked lines.

    • 4

Figure the strap slit positions. These will be two 2-inch slits made for inserting the high chair safety strap through the cover.
Measure up 8 inches from the bottom of the large rectangle and 4 inches in from each side edge and make small marks at each point. At the points cut 2-inch vertical slits. The slits will begin 8 inches from the bottom of the rectangle and will end 10 inches from the bottom of the cover.

    • 5

Position the two smaller rectangles to the large rectangle. One small rectangle will be sewn to the large rectangle at each side. Place one small rectangle with the width side at the top along the edge of the large rectangle. Position the small rectangle 13 inches from the top of the large rectangle and align raw edges. Pin to secure. Repeat this same step with the other small rectangle on the opposite side of the large rectangle. Make sure that the small rectangles are positioned evenly to each other. Sew each small rectangle to the large rectangle with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You should have just made a "T-shaped" piece.

    • 6

Sew the sides of the rectangle as follows.
Lay out the T-shaped piece you have constructed with right side facing up. At each of the four inner corners of the shape, measure out 5 inches both vertically and horizontally. Mark these spots on each of the four corners. Pin to secure and sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance from the inner corners to the 5-inch spots that were marked.

    • 7

Clip the corners and turn the cover right side out through each leg hole. Top stitch around the edges, if desired. The high chair cover is finished and ready to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Polar fleece is a nice choice for making this cover because you don't have to worry about finishing the edges. You can leave them raw and save yourself some sewing steps and time.
