Would you benefit from sleep disorder treatment? Perhaps you are having trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep, or waking up short of breath. Maybe your partner is telling you that you snore and waking you up multiple times each night to get you to stop. Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by finding a doctor that specializes in sleep disorder treatment. Start by following the link in the resources section of this article. Using that link, you should be able to find a doctor that specializes in sleep disorder treatment near you. Once you have located a doctor, check to see if she or he is in your insurance network. Then, call and make an appointment.

  2. Step 2

Once you have an appointment with a care provider who specializes in sleep disorder treatment, begin to prepare for your meeting with them. Keep a log of your sleeping habits that lists when you go to bed, when you get up, along with any night waking or partner complaints of snoring.

  3. Step 3

When you go to your appointment, the doctor will ask you about your sleeping habits, so your log will come in very handy. At this point, she or he will likely set up an appointment for a sleep test.

  4. Step 4

When you go to you sleep test do determine the type of sleep disorder treatment you might need, they will hook you up to all kinds of wires that will monitor your breathing, heart rate, skin temperature, perspiration levels, etc. If you have a hard time falling asleep, they might offer you some medication to help. You will sleep at the sleep center overnight (without guests) so that they can monitor how you sleep.

  5. Step 5

Following your sleep test, you will meet with your doctor to discuss your sleep disorder treatment. If you stopped breathing during your breathing test (called apnea), they may have tried a CPAP machine on you. At your appointment, your doctor may decide to prescribe a CPAP machine for you to use at home in order to keep your breathing regular. Using the machine every night is a vital part of sleep disorder treatment. It may be annoying at first, but you will get used to it in time, so stick with it. If any other disorders were found, your doctor may also recommend surgery or medication. Make sure to follow all instructions and before you know it, you will be getting a great night's sleep!
