Learn how to clean a tub easy, effectively with a few unusual but common things in your kitchen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start off with wetting the sides and bottom of the tub with water. This is a good time to wipe out any free particles, hair or crud that may freely be drained or picked out.

  2. Step 2

Once the tub is wet, sprinkle a layer of baking soda along the sides and bottom of the tub. Measure the amount of baking soda in comparison to how dirty the tub is, though even for the most dirty of tubs, not much is required.

  3. Step 3

Use the scrub brush in circular motions in the tub, scrubbing the baking soda against the walls and floor of the tub thoroughly. Make sure to scrub everywhere, whatever is missed may not be as clean as desired otherwise.

  4. Step 4

Pour a generous amount of vinegar over the tub's sides and watch the bubbles form. As they begin, start scrubbing to further enhance the cleaning effect, again with circular motions. It is best to scrub the walls furthest from the drain first and let the vinegar, baking soda and dirt fall to the floor of the tub. Work your way towards the drain slowly, sweeping the dirt and used cleaning liquid along towards the drain.

  5. Step 5

Scoop the dirt to the drain and rinse the tub, starting from the walls furthest from the drain. Coax the rest of the dirt, baking soda and vinegar along with the water, into the drain.

Tips & Warnings
  • You wet the tub in the beginning to give the baking soda something to adhere to.
  • You may take a break after scrubbing the vinegar/baking soda solution to let it "soak in" to the tough stains if your tub is exceptionally dirty. Don't wait too long or you may have to re-wet the solution.
  • Using baking soda and vinegar together creates a foaming effect and could be fun to do with young children to encourage them along a path of cleanliness by showing them the more entertaining side of it.
  • Baking soda and vinegar are both designed ready for human consumption and are harmless to inhale, unlike other chemicals and potent products sold in stores for the specific purpose of cleaning a tub.
  • Vinegar has a potent smell, so be careful not to add too much vinegar in such a closed space as it could overwhelm you, although it is not unhealthy to inhale.
