Branch Circuit Lighting is relatively easy to do if you know what you are doing. The 2x4 light consist of usually 2 ballast 4 fluorescent bulbs and wiring inside.

      2x4 lights ready for installation

      To begin with you need a Panel with sufficient breaker size to hold the load of the lighting being installed. Runt the wire up above the ceiling where the t-bar (ceiling) is to be set. Once the ceiling is set you are ready to begin setting lights.

      Set the light inside the tgrid ceiling, staggering the lights according to specifications from the Contractor. Once the lights are set in the t-grid the next step is to tie the ends with wire one on each side. These are for seismic situations and are usually only required on the west coast. Once this is done you are ready to begin wiring your lights.

      From the panel you have run your wire above the ceiling, once this is done the first wire will go to the first light. On the top is a cover, the cover comes out and the wire is exposed. Here you will do the make up of the light. Usually there will be a black white and green wire. Wire according to the color with the wire brought in.

      Inside the light itself is a cover that sits between the lights to be installed, take this cover off and inside should be 2 ballast. The wiring diagram inside will show you how to wire to each ballast. The flourescent lights sit inside tombstones that have the wires from the ballast attatched. Wire according to specifications.

      Out of this first light you will take another wire which you have connected to the first light and run it to the next light. The same procedure is followed until you get to the end of the line. The last light. There are a few more things to know before doing this project but this covers the basics.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always have ample supplies to do the job you are starting.

  • Use proper tools and be careful of ladder saftey.

  • Install lights according to Contractor specifications

  • Never work on any electrical system when power is on.

  • Use a lock out tag out system at your main power to prevent accidental switching on of power supply.

  • When working any electrical sytem work with a qualified electricians supervision.
